Suburban Psycho Drama (2000)

IN THE COMPOSER’S OWN WORDS

“It’s always special when friends ask you to compose a piece for them, and when Derek and Kathy called me to write something for an upcoming concert they had, I was really thrilled. They are such wonderful musicians and performers, I got very excited and set to work.

“For some time I have been interested in the psychology of suburban living. It confused me as a child, and it still does, If I’m honest. Neighborhoods of houses surrounded by lawns away from any town center have always been mysterious and unnerving for me.

“I no longer remember why I wanted to take this as my subject, I must have just come from a long visit with my family in their suburban home and been newly struck by the phenomenon. It seems an easy subject to send up and it was fun to compose this piece with all of that in mind.”
