Regarding Women (1992)
IN THE COMPOSER’S OWN WORDS
“When I got the call from SECCA in 1990 to present a complete evening of my works on their concert series the following season, I jumped at the chance, even though I was pretty sure I hadn’t composed an evening’s worth of music yet. This was the perfect opportunity to create one. Regarding Women was the centerpiece of that event. The piece includes a song that my family used to sing to the women in the family when they were children. ‘Hush little baby’ tells the story of all the things that that female child should expect to have in her life, including diamond rings and children of her own. While some may find this charming, this to me signifies a cultural mapping to keep women in their place. This is one of the more insidious ways that the white male class retains its power. My piece intends to tell the story of breaking that mold and moving into a new reality. It has a complicated message but ultimately is a work of triumph and celebration”
