“In late May of 2020, the world was in crisis with the coronavirus pandemic raging. The United States, and then the world, erupted in countrywide demonstrations as video footage of the murder of George Floyd was shared on social media and beyond. It was at this point that I was releasing a track per week from my new album of solo piano music, Strange Energies. This moment called for something else besides any kind of promotion. My friend Jacob Slattery suggested that I compose and record something new, something that spoke to the moment. I wasn’t sure that I would be able to do it, and for a few long days, nothing came. Then suddenly there it was and with the performance date fast-approaching, I practiced as I composed, finally completing the composition the morning of the performance. This recording is of that live performance.”
