Carry Me Down to the River of Grace (1995)
IN THE COMPOSER’S OWN WORDS
“Based on a series of American folk songs, I wrote Carry Me Down to the River of Grace while a student at Yale in 1995. Growing up in North Carolina, my family was spent summers in the mountains. My grandfather, also a composer, used folk songs in many of his pieces. In that way we were very folk song-oriented. Carry Me Down to the River of Grace is built on melodies like Amazing Grace, Down by the River, and others, which I harmonized and deconstructed to create a series of variations.”
